A Resting Space
Since we landed in France, it has been a roller coaster of ups and downs emotionally, mentally and physically. Colmar was the perfect place for rest after much shuffling in Paris. If ever there was a town built with Christmas
in mind, Colmar may just as well be that place. Full of whimsy and holiday cheer, the cobblestone streets were
full of authentic Alsatian fair and tourists from around the globe. The Christmas market opened at 10am and
closed at 7pm along with many of their local shops and restaurants. This town set the pace for our stay and the
sun sealed the deal everyday around 4:45pm making for early evenings spent at home with food we foraged the markets for during the day.
"He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,..."
This verse has made its appearance bold in many areas of my life but this time was experienced in a new
refreshing way. It was a time to unplug from the hustle and bustle of city life, entrepreneur life, travel life, busy life
and just get down to the bare bones of it all. Time with our Creator, with each other and far from giving each other
our leftover time and energy. Colmar was a place where we literally were swayed into a lullaby with every church
bell ring and a place where pulled each other closer as the winter air surrounded us. Even our flat smelled of freshly baked gingerbread cookies and hot wine.
The Challenge is Real
If you're a momprenuer like myself you will totally get the struggle when you are faced with this here verse:
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your
son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."— Exodus 20:8-11
Yeep! My husband and I both have struggled with this verse for the past decade but having made ourselves
burnt out from our own strength years over, we are finally coming to a place where we have repented and really
make efforts to make the sabbath day what God created it to be. And in doing so Ive had to reroute much of my
thinking and planning to make this day truly be restful and allowing things I think 'must' be done to be put to rest until Monday.
It's not heroic or noble to run on fumes. Because a person who tired, weary, sick and stressed doesnt' speak life
to anyone. In fact it does the opposite. Even Jesus took time to get away from the crowds to be alone with the Lord.
Joy and peace is the standard of a Christian life. A good measuring tool is to take observation of the joy and
peace you have taking residence in your mind, on your lips and in your actions. Examine yourself and make sure
you're not trying to make it all happen on your own. God is quite aware of your situation but I'm convinced He
more concerned with your heart than your situation. Remember, He can do anything.
Are you okay with every material/career goal failing? I'd say if so, keep up the great work! You're off to a great
start in knowing your trust is in Him and not your storehouse or status
Thank you Christmas in Colmar
I'm thankful for the reminder this small town gave us. I like to call Colmar 'the city that always sleeps' and a
wonderful place to spend the holidays remembering the first ministry is your family. What can your spouse and
children say about you and your relationship with them?
So there we were in the Alsace region. Our connection there has been with a Christian school (grade
kindergarten-12th grade) in an adorable town called Guebwiller about 30 minutes south of Colmar. After our first
connection we are very excited to be able to see what God is doing in their community and possibly sharing our
experience as Artists with young minds that are navigating the power of art and connecting that with the values
we hold as believers while honoring the God we serve. So if you just so happen to be standing alongside us in this journey through prayer, by all means we'd sure appreciate them!
